India, officially  the Republic of India is a country in South Asia. It is the most populous democracy and the seventh largest country by area in the World. India stole the limelight at the World Tourism Mart 2011 in London by winning two global awards – World’s Leading Destination and World’s Leading Tourist Board. Well, why not? It’s Incredible India!

Why India is so special to be called as Incredible India? Check out these facts:

Floating Post Office: India has the largest network of post offices in the world! but, did you know? there is a floating post office in Dal Lake, Srinagar which was inaugurated in August 2011.

The Wettest Place in the World: Mawsynram is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya. The village received the highest recorded average rainfall in the World. It is also interesting to know that Cherrapunji is also a part of Meghalaya!

The highest cricket ground in the World: At an altitude of 2,444 meters, the Chail Cricket Ground in Chail, Himachal Pradesh, is the highest in the world! Chali is a hill station in Himachal Pradesh and is 44 kms from Shimla and 46 kms from Solan.

The word ‘Shampoo’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘champu’: A variety of herbs and their extracts were used as shampoos since ancient times in India. Infact, the word ‘shampoo’ was derived from the word ‘champoo’ which means cleansing with hair and body massage.

The Indian Kabaddi team has won all World Cups: Don’t be surprised! Yes, the Indian Kabaddi team have won all the five World Cups till now. The Indian women’s team has also won all World Cups till now!

India discovered water on the moon!: On November 14, 2008, the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 released the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) that impacted Shackleton Crater, of the lunar south pole, at 20:31 on 14 November 2008 releasing subsurface debris that was analyzed for presence of water ice.

 Science day in Switzerland is dedicated to our own APJ Abdul Kalam: The father of Indian missile program APJ Abdul Kalam visited Switzerland on 2006. Since then, May 26 is declared as science day in Switzerland which is dedicated to Kalam!

India’s first rocket was transported in cycle: We don’t need an introduction to ISRO and its accomplishments, but did you know? the first rocket was transported in bicycle!

Second largest English speaking country: Around 125 million people speak English which just 10% of India’s population; however, it is the second highest next to USA! Well, this number is expected to grow in near future.

The human calculator: Shakuntala Devi was awarded the title of ‘Human Calculator’ when she demonstrated the multiplication of two 13-digit numbers—7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779—picked at random by the Computer Department of Imperial College London. She correctly answered 18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730 in 28 seconds!

Rabindranath Tagore also wrote the national anthem for Bangladesh: Rabindranath Tagore is credited not only for writing the Indian national anthem,Jana Gana Mana, but the Bangladeshi national anthem, Amar Sonar Bangla, as well!

Diamonds were first mined in India: For 1,000 years, starting in roughly the 4th century BC, India was the only source of diamonds. In 1725, important sources were discovered in Brazil and until then, India led the diamond production in the World!

Special polling station is set up for only one person in Gir Forest: Since 2004, Bharatdas Darshandas, 55, belonging to Banej village deep in the Gir forest in Junagadh, is the privileged voter to whom special polling booth is setup!
